Mat Latos Puts up Historically Bad Start in Marlins Debut

If the first two games of the season are any indication, the Miami Marlins still have a long way to go before being taken seriously in the National League East.

Going up against an Atlanta Braves team that seemed to trade away its entire roster, the Marlins have dropped two in a row at home.

While Monday’s loss was bad enough, it didn’t compare in any way to the downright humiliating performance from the team on Tuesday evening.

Mat Latos, who was acquired by the Marlins from the Cincinnati Reds during the winter, is being relied on to be a top-end of the rotation guy this year.

That obviously didn’t happen in the Marlins 12-2 loss to Atlanta.

The pitcher’s line was about as bad as it gets: 0.2 innings, six hits, seven runs, zero strikeouts and two walks.

In fact, one of the two outs Latos did record came via a sacrifice bunt by Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood. Of the 10 batters Latos faced, eight reached base safely. More than that, Latos was booed heavily in his first start in front of the home crowd.

CBS Sports give us some insight regarding Latos “historical” outing.

Overall, it was a disastrous performance from a pitcher that has been pretty darn good over the years. The good news for Latos and company is that the MLB season is a marathon, not a sprint. He will have plenty of opportunities to rebound from this embarrassing effort.
