Report: San Francisco 49ers to Release Stevie Johnson

The San Francisco 49ers just signed wide receiver Torrey Smith to a five-year contract. Pending him passing a physical, the team will reportedly release wide receiver Stevie Johnson.

Johnson, who reportedly refused to take a pay cut, will leave San Francisco after just one season. He was acquired from the Buffalo Bills for a fourth-round pick during the 2014 draft. In his only year with the 49ers, Johnson recorded just 35 receptions for 435 yards and three touchdowns. This came on the heels of him putting up 1,000-plus yards in three of his previous for seasons in Buffalo.

This move will save San Francisco about $6 million under the cap.

We shall see if the 28-year-old wideout attracts any interest on the open market soon enough.
