Report: Jets to Release Percy Harvin

In a move that many expected, the New York Jets are reportedly on the verge of releasing troubled wide receiver Percy Harvin. This comes on the heels of the team acquiring Brandon Marshall from the Chicago Bears earlier on Friday.

Harvin, 26, came to the Jets via an in-season trade with the Seattle Seahawks. In eight games with the Jets, Harvin put up 29 receptions for 350 yards. He was set to count $10.5 million against the cap in 2015—a number that the former first-round pick refused to renegotiate. Releasing Harvin saves the Jets that entire $10.5 million against the cap.

Despite multiple tools that should have made Harvin one of the most dynamic receivers in the NFL, a combination of injuries and character concerns have kept him from realizing his full potential.

At 26, Harvin still has time to prove that he can live up to the production we saw early in his career after the Minnesota Vikings made him a first-round pick back in 2009. In this, he should draw some decent interest on the open market.
