Report: C.J. Spiller to Sign with the Saints

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Bufffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller has agreed to join the New Orleans Saints.

Spiller’s best statistical output came in 2012, where he tallied 1,244 rushing yards and six touchdowns, registering 43 receptions for 459 yards and two scores.

The former first-round pick earned a spot in the Pro Bowl that season but has regressed since then.

Following a 933-yard, two-touchdown performance in 2013, the Clemson product recorded just 425 yards on 97 total touches last season, missing seven games due to a collarbone injury.

Between horrid guard play and Spiller’s unwillingness to run inside, the Bills’ offensive system ill-fitted the back. Additionally, Buffalo recently acquired LeSean McCoy, which effectively eliminated any lingering chance Spiller would return.

His injury concerns are legitimate, though perhaps somewhat overblown. The 5’11”, 200-pound runner has only been sidelined for 10 contests throughout his five-year NFL career.

Now that Spiller is set to join the Saints, he will team up with recently re-signed Mark Ingram to form a solid running back duo behind Drew Brees. Spiller will act as the outside runner and receiving threat on passing downs, while Ingram will be the between-the-tackles runner he was the past few seasons.

Seven other NFL teams—including the Dolphins, 49ers and Cardinals—had reportedly expressed interest in the running back.
