Marcus Mariota on Being the Potential First Pick: “It’s not a Huge Thing”

Where is the gratitude for this year’s upcoming NFL draft? Or perhaps there is just a major case of humble pie being dished. Quarterback Marcus Mariota had this to share regarding the possibility that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may select him as the first overall pick in this year’s NFL draft (via the Buccaneers’ official website).

You know, being the first pick to me, it’s not a huge thing. I would love to play for the Bucs. But that being said, I think if you find the team that wants you, that’s going to be the right team.

Mariota’s statement could be viewed with mixed opinions. It is clear that he would like to play with a team that he feels is the best fit for him. That seems to counter what fellow top prospect Jameis Winston is thinking at this point in the draft process.

It’s important because I know how hard, Winston said. “I’ve worked and it would be a privilege to get accepted by the Glazer family in Tampa.”

Mariota’s nonchalant feelings about potentially going No. 1 overall fits perfectly with the fact that Winston does not even plan to attend the draft.

Maybe these guys just aren’t buying into the hype of the NFL draft. If so, that would be a refreshing turnabout after all the hoopla this event has received in recent years.
