5 Will Ferrell Characters Who Made Great Athletes

Will Ferrell is on every single piece of social media this week making appearances on several Major League Baseball rosters. Ferrell will play  all nine positions on 10 different teams as part of an HBO special and comedy website Funny or DieThe nine positions are in honor of former Major Leaguer Bert Campaneris, who did the same thing during a game in 1965.

Still, this is not Will Ferrell’s first attempt at athleticism. A huge USC Trojan football fan, he has played an athlete in the past.

Here are some of his best.

Jackie Moon, Semi-Pro

Ferrell played an owner/coach/player of the Flint Tropics (American Basketball Association) where he used a lot of extreme tactics to get more fans to the stadium. In one instance, he even attempted wrestling a bear after a game in hopes of an attendance increase.

Still, the afro, and the obvious basketball skills made Jackie Moon a lovable hero. Plus, when you are working along side Woody Harrelson, the ingredients make for a delicious and hilarious movie.

Ricky Bobby, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Some people don’t believe professional race car drivers are athletes, and that’s okay. However, Ricky Bobby deemed that to be untrue in the classic hit Talladega Nights where he plays a professional NASCAR driver who is on the top of the world one moment, only to come away with nothing.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Molly Shannon make cameo appearances in the movie, but some of the best gifs come from the 2006 comedy.

Frank “The Tank”, Old School

No, I will not show the video of Ferrell going streaking. But you have to admit, Frank’s athleticism quite impressive. The way he Forrest Gump’s it on his way to The Quad was amazing. Luckily his wife came to rescue him.

Yes, we know he was nude. But any man who can consume that much alcohol (and run) is a hero in my book.

Buddy, Elf

We all remember Will in this role.

And he is easily a first-round draft pick the way he throws those snowballs. Adjust your fantasy teams accordingly. The guy throws gas.

Detective Allen Gamble, The Other Guys

For one moment, let’s forget about the fact that Mark Wahlberg shot Derek Jeter. Let’s remember the poised and relaxed character Ferrell plays.

Not only does Will Ferrell come out on top in this movie, but he has the discipline to constantly turn down extreme hottie Eva Mendez. Could you? I couldn’t.

At the end of the film, the narrator makes sure to let the audience know the real heroes are the “everyday people who work to make a difference, not the ones who appear in the newspaper or on TV.” Awesome.

Watch Will Ferrell this week as he makes his way around Major League Baseball and brings a personality only he can to the diamond in support of the battle against cancer.
