Report: Vernon Davis and Aldon Smith Have Both Listed their Houses for Sale

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis still has one year left on a contract scheduled to count nearly $7 million against the cap in 2015. Linebacker Aldon Smith, who is also set to become a free agent after next year, is due a paycheck of approximately $9.8 million in 2015.

According to ESPN, both have placed their Bay Area homes on the market.

While 49ers’ general manager Trent Baalke reported at the NFL Scouting Combine that Davis would “absolutely” be back with the 49ers next season, this bit of news is a little puzzling.

Davis could be sensing something here. He is coming off the worst season of an otherwise productive nine-year career. He tallied just 26 receptions for 245 yards and two scores on 50 targets. In fact, Pro Football Focus (subscription required), graded Davis out as the sixth-worst tight end in the NFL this past year.

On the other hand, Smith played in just seven games after serving a nine-game suspension for gun charges and a DUI. In Smith’s seven games, he recorded just two sacks.

While the specifics of Smith’s home listing were not made available, Davis’ home is reportedly on the market for “about” $2.45 million. The home was originally purchased for $1.98 million in 2012. If you are a real estate agent up in the San Jose area and you find Davis a buyer, you could stand to earn at three percent—a handy $73,500 commission from the sale.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean both are going to be jettisoned from San Francisco, it’s important to note that the team could save about $5 million by releasing Davis.
