Report: Josh McCown Visits the Buffalo Bills

Quarterback Josh McCown, who was just released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Wednesday, visited with the Buffalo Bills on Monday.

A deal is not certain at this point, and McCown’s visit is the first of a few scheduled according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

The two sides had expected to negotiate a contract when McCown visited the team facility in Western New York, but he left without inking a new deal.

If things go well between McCown and the Bills, Rex Ryan will have less to worry about regarding the Bills’ quarterback dilemma. Though McCown will be 36 come opening day of the 2015 season, his career playing age is younger. Prior to last season in Tampa Bay, McCown had only started 38 games in the NFL.

Not afraid to start adding quarterback strength to his new team, Ryan had this to say last week (via WGR Radio in Buffalo).

We got the draft coming up, free agency is coming up. Are there trade possibilities? You look at every possible scenario there is. From Doug Whaley and our scouts, all of our position coaches, we’re looking at that.

As for McCown’s career, he was a third-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2002 where he had 22 career starts in his four years with the team. He has since played for Detroit, Oakland, Carolina and Chicago where he spent three seasons before moving along to Tampa Bay in 2014. This past season saw McCown throw for 2,206 yards with 11 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions.

If McCown does choose the Bills, he would be putting himself in a rather good situation. Not only is the starting quarterback job up for grabs in Buffalo, the team has some rather talented position players, including wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods.
