John Elway: Broncos will Either Re-Sign or Franchise Demaryius Thomas

Those teams around the NFL that were holding out hope that Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas would somehow hit the free-agent market next month, John Elway has decided to rain on their parade.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday, the Broncos general manager did not mince words when it comes to the star receiver and the team’s willingness to do anything to bring him back next season.

While this isn’t necessary too surprising on the surface, Elway’s willingness to speak so candidly regarding Thomas’ status should indicate that the team plans to work long and hard to sign him to a long-term extension. If not, the franchise tag will be used as a fall back option.

The 27-year-old pass catcher has recorded nearly 300 receptions for 4,483 yards and 35 touchdowns over the past three seasons—all with Peyton Manning under center. Thomas is also coming off a 2014 campaign that saw him tally a ridiculous 111 receptions for over 1,600 yards on an eye opening 184 targets.

If tagged, Thomas would cost about $13 million against the cap next season.

With Thomas slated to return to Denver in 2015, it leaves open the strong possibility that his namesake (Julius Thomas) at tight end will hit the open market next month. Recent reports suggest that the lesser of the two “Thomas brothers” is looking to cash in on free agency, which indicates he’s unlikely to return to Denver in 2015.
