Dolphins Discussing Massive Long-Term Deal with Ryan Tannehill

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is one of the brightest young players at his position in the NFL. The former first-round pick is coming off a 2014 campaign that saw him put up over 4,000 yards with 27 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions—by far the best season of his three-year career.

Now with only one year remaining on his rookie deal, the Dolphins are reportedly in discussions with Tannehill on a long-term deal that could pay him up to $105 million (with incentives) over seven years.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel is reporting that Miami could be looking to lock Tannehill up on a deal structured similar to what San Francisco 49ers signal caller Colin Kaepernick received this past offseason. That is to say, a $15 million average salary with only the first two years guaranteed.

Miami’s options are not limited here.

It could let Tannehill play out the final year of his contract at under $3 million. It could also decide to pick up a $15 million option for the 2016 season—a right afforded to teams under the current collective bargaining agreement.

Considering Tannehill has progressed in each of the past two seasons, it makes sense for the Dolphins to work on a long-term deal this offseason. In reality, he could demand more money and more guaranteed should the Texas A&M product continue to progress in 2015.

Some may think this potential deal is outlandish, but it’s important to understand the situation surrounding quarterbacks in today’s NFL. Miami boasts one of the best young signal callers in the league right now. It simply can’t afford to play with fire when it comes to the long-term future of the franchise.

In any event, Miami looks like it is being proactive here. That’s a far cry from the Jeff Ireland administration.
