Super Bowl Ad Campaign Focuses on Acceptance of Gay Players in the NFL

SCRUFF, a gay social networking medium used by over seven million people, is running a billboard ad campaign in Glendale in the lead up to Super Bowl XLIX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

The organizers believe that there are more gay players in the NFL, most of whom are afraid to come out because of the perception of an outwardly gay football player.

Former St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys defensive end Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted in the league when St. Louis picked him in the seventh round of the 2014 draft this past May.

For his part, Sam indicated last year that he heard from a few gay players currently in the NFL, who thanked him privately for showing the courage to come out.

Common sense indicates, especially when looking at nation-wide demographics, that there are numerous gay players currently in the National Football. The changing dynamics in American society could very well help them blaze a trail that includes more gay players publicly declaring their sexual orientation.

While this ad campaign is a minor aspect of the movement, it could very well play a larger role than most people think.
