Former five-star recruit Jeff Driskel has been granted his release from the Florida Gators football program. New head coach Jim McElwain indicated that the program wasn’t going to hold Driskel “hostage” when announcing the release of his scholarship.
This means that the soon-to-be senior quarterback will be given an opportunity to catch on with another top-tier program.
Duke was previously mentioned as a possibility. This makes sense, especially considering the presence of widely respected offensive mind David Cutcliffe as the program’s head coach and the graduation of senior quarterback Anthony Boone.
After finishing the 2012 campaign with a 10-2 record, Florida’s future seemed bright with Driskel under center. However, he has struggled with poor play and injuries since, throwing just 11 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions. Driskel was benched earlier this year for Treon Harris, who is starting the team’s bowl game on Saturday.
Coming out of high school, Driskel was the No. 1 ranked quarterback recruit in the nation, ahead of Ohio State’s Braxton Miller and Southern Cal’s Cody Kessler.
It will be interesting to see where he lands.
