Derek Fisher: Knicks Could Shut Carmelo Anthony Down for the Season

Any hope that the New York Knicks could turn things around after a brutal 5-30 start to the season could be shattered due to news that star forward Carmelo Anthony might be shut down for the remainder of the season.

Speaking about the possibility that Anthony has played his final game for the Knicks this season, first-year head coach Derek Fisher had this to say (via ESPN).

From the conversations I’ve been a part of, I think everybody is smart enough to realize, calendar wise, timing wise, that there may come a point that that’s the decision that needs to be made,” Fisher said Friday. “But [we realize] that we can’t force Carmelo to that point just yet.

For all intents and purposes, this has been a lost season for Anthony and the Knicks. They are currently in the midst of a 10-game losing streak, and the All-Star has been dealing with knee pain since the team’s second game. Overall, the Knicks have won one game since November 22nd. It might not be worth it for Fisher and Co. to risk Anthony’s long-term health for a season that has been an utter dumpster fire from the get go.

Anthony sat out the team’s 16-point loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday. He joined a plethora of injured Knicks, including  Amar’e Stoudemire, Tim Hardaway Jr., Samuel Dalembert and Iman Shumpert on the bench for that game.
