UAB to Announce the End of the School’s Football Program

UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) will no longer have a football program following the team’s upcoming bowl game.

According to Kevin Scarbinsky of AL.com, UAB President Ray Watts will inform his administrative staff and other school employees of the plans to discontinue the school’s football program.

Scarbinsky goes on to indicate that Watts could also make a public announcement.

This has been expected for some time. Former players, including Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White, expressed concern that the powers to be at Birmingham were considering the discontinuation of a football program that has been around since the early 1990’s. The program has appeared in just one bowl game and has finished with a record of above .500 just three times.

There has also been some concern that the University of Alabama, which wants to corner college football in that market, has played some role in the events of the past few months.
