It appears that Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez didn’t take much time finding a replacement for recently departed head coach Gary Anderson, who suddenly left for Oregon State on Wednesday.
According to multiple reports, the Badgers on the verge of hiring current Pittsburgh Panthers head coach and former Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst as the program’s new head coach.
Chryst began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with West Virginia and held multiple assistant coaching jobs at both the professional and college ranks until finally finding a coordinator job with Oregon State in 2003. After two years with the Beavers, Chryst joined his Alma mater in Madison back in 2005.
In seven years as Wisconsin’s offensive coordinator, Chryst led one of the nation’s most dominating run games with the likes of John Clay and Montee Ball, among others, before finding his first head coaching gig at Pitt in 2012.
Known as an innovative offensive mind, Wisconsin will continue its ground-and-pound attack should Chryst become its new head coach, which seems more than likely based on recent reports.
He’s the brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback coach Geep Chryst. That’s also something to keep an eye on should San Francisco make changes to its coaching staff in the offseason. Geep could very well take on an offensive coordinator role with his brother at Wisconsin.
