With Questions Regarding Jay Cutler’s Future, Bears Add Rookie QB to Active Roster

The Chicago Bears have added rookie sixth-round pick David Fales to the active roster from the practice squad. While this normally wouldn’t be news worth a second look, it does take on added importance based on the internal belief in Chicago that Jay Cutler might not be the long-term solution at quarterback.

Fales, a San Jose State product, was considered an early-round prospect early in the draft process. He struggled big time during postseason events, dropping him all the way to Chicago in the sixth round.

At 5-8 on the season, Chicago is completely out of the NFC Playoff race. If the team isn’t sold on Cutler, it might make sense to look another direction late in the season. That could have been one of the reasons it activated Fales from the practice squad.

Then again, general manager Phil Emery and Co. could have been worried that another team was preparing to offer Fales a spot on its 53-man roster.

Either way, any changes at the quarterback position in Chicago, even something seemingly as minimal as this, needs to be taken into account. That was only magnified by the recent public spat between offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer and Cutler.
