Mark Cuban Tells us Why Some Teams Suck

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is never afraid to voice his opinion on a wide range of topics. So when the volatile owner sat down with Business Insider to discuss some topics around the sports world, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that he opened up about what separates successful and unsuccessful franchises.

When asked why some sports teams consistently suck, the interviewer using the New York Jets and New York Knicks as an example, Cuban responded.

The hardest thing for a sports team owner to do is hire a coach, period. Rick Carlisle has been our coach since the 2008-2009 season, but before that, he was basically my third coach in four years. And so going through and trying to find that right one is important.

As a hands-on owner, Cuban is the one responsible for making coaching decisions. He’s also highly involved in the player personnel department in Dallas. The interesting thing here is that NFL teams that tend to be structured where the owner has a huge role are those who struggle. Just look at Al Davis with the Raiders during the latter years of his life. And now under his son, Mark, that seems to be the case.

Speaking of Dallas, the Cowboys have had major issues with both their player personnel department and finding the right coach. And while everything seems to be coming together this season for Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones, that hasn’t always been a great relationship.

It really is interesting to hear Cuban talking about this, especially considering his Mavericks have had consistent success with him being so involved in the day-to-day operations of the franchise.

Cuban continues…

And just not ‘funking it up.’ Dirk Nowitzki has been our start for 15 years. And every year, we will trade you so and so. But you look at some teams, they’ve made these huge trades that have backfired.

This could very well be Cuban’s roundabout way of discussing the hot mess that the New York Knicks have become. Seemingly always in the midst of player turnover, that franchise simply doesn’t have the structure in place to be competitive on a consistent basis. And while new president Phil Jackson may be in the process of changing this, it most definitely is something to keep an eye on.

As always, Cuban is a great listen.
