Redskins Prepared to Bench Robert Griffin III Against the 49ers

If you have paid attention to the entire Robert Griffin III drama in D.C. this past week, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Washington Redskins are fully prepared to bench the struggling signal caller should he struggle early against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

According to ESPN insider Chris Mortensen, RGIII could very well be yanked in favor of Colt McCoy should things start to snowball against one of the league’s top defenses in Santa Clara.

If Jay Gruden’s stinging words this week about quarterback Robert Griffin III have not resonated, team sources tell ESPN that the Washington Redskins coach is prepared to speak louder if the third-year quarterback does not perform more consistently Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Gruden’s level of criticism directed at RGIII makes this story less than surprising. And at 3-7 on the season, the Redskins may just need to move on from their enigmatic quarterback.

Should RGIII be benched, the larger issue becomes his long-term future with the team. As of yet, the former No. 2 overall pick has not been benched due to performance in his career. Once that changes, all bets are off as it relates to RGIII beyond the 2014 campaign.
