NFL Relocation Could be Part of November Meeting

With all the rumors surrounding the potential relocation of a current NFL team to a new city, it appears that some powerful owners around the league are set to discuss the subject at a meeting later this month.

CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora discussed the situation in great detail in a recent post over the weekend.

The NFL has called a special meeting of its stadium and finance committees — groups that feature many of most powerful owners in the league — for later this month, and while possible relocation of teams to Los Angeles is not on the official agenda, according to league sources, it is possible for the topic to be discussed.

There are a few interesting points that need to be brought up here.

* NFL owners are set to meet multiple times in December, which means that this high-level meeting set to take place later in November could act as a precursor to a larger discussion about the subject next month.

* Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots, who are slated to take part in the November meeting, have been the biggest proponents of getting a team in Southern California for the first time in 20 years.

* These two owners have also been part of conference calls that have taken place over the past year to discuss potential relocation projects to Los Angeles.

Logistically speaking, the time frame for this meeting is rather interesting. The NFL would have to come to some sort of conclusion about the relocation of a current franchise prior to the end of the 2014 calendar year in order to have all the pieces set in motion to get a team up and running next season.

Without a new state-of-the-art stadium in Los Angeles, the potential complications to a relocation could be widespread. Whether it is the Oakland Raiders, St Louis Rams or another team looking to move, they would have to find a temporary home for the next two years. That’s also one of the primary reason that this may have become a point of emphasis around the league in recent months.

It’s not hard to come to the conclusion that something may be on the verge of happening as it relates to a team relocating to Southern California. And with the Raiders currently in the midst of a major standoff with both the city of Oakland as well as the Coliseum, it would make sense for them to uproot from Northern California. This doesn’t even take into account Mark Davis’ flirtation with both Los Angeles and San Antonio in recent months as well as the fact that the Raiders’ lease with O.co runs out after this year.
