Mark Cuban: Hypocritical for Pro Leagues to Oppose Gambling

Never afraid to stir up the pot publicly, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban indicated that it is hypocritical of pro leagues to oppose gambling and pretty much aligned himself with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on this topic.

Silver wrote an op-ed in the New York Times earlier this month that showed support of legalized sports gambling. In that piece, Silver had this to say.

I believe that sports bettering should be brought out of the underground and into the sunlight where it can be appropriately monitored and regulated.

Cuban, who hasn’t been much of a friend to the commissioner’s office in recent years, seemed to support Silver’s claims (via ESPNDallas).

I think we’re the world’s biggest hypocrites when we say, ‘Oh, we don’t want you betting on our games,’ and then we get all excited about the sports betting line and people go to Vegas on trips won from the NBA or NFL. I mean, it’s hugely hypocritical.

I just think that Adam did the exact right thing. I think by focusing on the federal regulations and making the changes there, that it will change. It’s just a question of when.

The NBA is one of the four major sports leagues that filed a lawsuit against the state of New Jersey to stop legislation that would have legalized sports gambling in the state. With both Cuban (one of the most popular owners) and Silver now prepared to support sports gambling, the tide could change here a bit.
