Mariners Sign Kyle Seager to $100 Million Extension

The Seattle Mariners have yet to hit the free agent market hard this offseason, but they appear to have signed third baseman Kyle Seager to a whopping seven-year, $100 million contract extension (via ESPN.com).

Seager hit .268 with 25 homers and 96 RBI in a 2014 season that saw him earn an All-Star appearance and win the Gold Glove award. All three were career high numbers for the 27-year-old infielder that seems to be right in the thick of his prime.

As the ESPN report indicated, this deal marks the third consecutive offseason that Seattle has doled out a $100 million contract. It signed Felix Hernandez to a seven-year, $175 million extension back in 2012 before giving Robinson Cano the largest contract (10-years, $240 million) in franchise history last offseason.

Still stuck behind the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics in the AL West, we can expect the Mariners to continue being active during the offseason. They have been linked to multiple power-hitting options, including Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz.

And based on this most recent extension, money won’t play a major role in what the Mariners do prior to the start of the 2015 campaign.
