DEA On Hand at NFL Stadiums to Investigate Teams After Week 11 Games

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was on site at multiple NFL stadiums this weekend investigating claims of “inappropriate distribution of painkillers by NFL teams,” according to a CBS Sports report.

The investigation stems from a lawsuit filed by ex-NFL players earlier this year that claims team doctors around the league provided them with painkillers and narcotics to numb injuries during their playing days. Those involved in that lawsuit include former Chicago Bears players Richard Dent, Jim McMahon and Keith Van Horne.

According to the CBS report, investigators were on hand at MetLife Stadium where the New York Giants hosted the San Francisco 49ers and in Washington where the Redskins played host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

DEA spokesman Rusty Payne confirmed that DEA personnel were questioning NFL medical personnel today after the conclusion of games. He declined to get into specifics of the investigation but said the following: “DEA agents are currently interviewing NFL team doctors in several locations as part of an ongoing investigation into potential violations of the CSA.”

They were surprise visits designed to make sure that the medical staffs for the visiting teams were following laws relating to  controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act.

There is no evidence that the 49ers and Buccaneers were being investigated for a reason. Rather, it’s more of a general sweep of NFL practices by the DEA.
