Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman most definitely isn’t afraid to open his mouth on and off the field. And following a less-than-inspiring 27-17 win over the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football, Sherman was back at it.
This time it was Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon who was on the receiving end of a postgame “tirade” (via CSN Washington).
Pierre doesn’t matter in this league,” Sherman said. Asked to clarify his comments, Sherman replied, “I mean exactly what I said.
Yeah,” Sherman said when asked if Garçon pulled his hair. “Pierre did a few things. When you can’t get open, you got to do whatever you can. The crowd is acting like I’m holding him. Obviously the TV copy you can see what happened.”
Sherman and the Seahawks didn’t play their best game, but they were able to overcome some questionable officiating and a ton of penalties to earn their third win of the season in Washington.
Sherman might not have had problems covering Garcon throughout the game, but he was involved in a 60-yard touchdown scoring strike from Kirk Cousins to DeSean Jackson in the first half. With that said, Seattle’s coverage on that play had Sherman shaded in another direction and he simply couldn’t make up for blown coverage by Kam Chancellor. This didn’t stop skeptics from placing blame Sherman’s way.
And possibly, much like we have seen over the years, Sherman’s own inability to look past what people think of him might have played a role in these postgame comments.
As it is, there is no room in the NFL for this type of stuff. Instead of insulting a player from an opposing team, Sherman should have just been happy with the win and moved on.
