Rex Ryan Names Geno Smith Starting QB for Week 6

So much for a quarterback controversy in New York. Jets head coach Rex Ryan, fresh off a 31-0 loss to the San Diego Chargers that saw him bench Geno Smith, has named the second-year quarterback the starter for next week’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Smith completed just 4-of-12 passes for 27 yards with an interception and zero touchdowns in the first half against San Diego. He was immediately replaced under center when the team took the field in the second half. Michael Vick responded by completing one of his first 11 passes before padding his stats after the Chargers went to prevent defense late in the fourth.

Ryan, who has tried his hardest to avoid a quarterback controversy in New York, appears to be ahead of the game here. There promised to be a ton of talk around the football world about who would start against the Denver Broncos next week.

Whether you agree with Ryan’s decision, it’s obvious he’s not prepared to turn to an aging Michael Vick, who simply isn’t anywhere near a starting quarterback in the NFL right now.

As it is, the Jets season is pretty much over. Losers of four consecutive and with a tough schedule coming up, this team could possibly find itself in a 1-9 hole prior to a Week 11 bye. It just remains to be seen who will get the snaps under center in the meantime.
