Jerry Jones: Cowboys Plan to Target Richard Sherman

The Dallas Cowboys are heading into CenturyLink to take on the defending Super Bowl champions on Sunday. Winners of four consecutive for the first time since 2011, they could very well make a major statement to the rest of the league that the Cowboys are back.

And unlike what we have seen from Seattle Seahawks opponents over the past couple seasons, Dallas is prepared to challenge All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman.

At least, that’s what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had to say to 105.3 FM The Fan in Dallas on Friday (h/t ESPN).

With all of the respect we have for him, we’re going to have to give him some business over there or we will hurt the balance of what we can do relative to certainly the passing game. We can’t run from him. That’s easy to say and hard to do. We got to challenge him and make him at least cover us one-on-one and Dez of course is the guy who can do it. So I don’t see us compromising the rest of our offense by running from Sherman like that.

A lot was made by the Green Bay Packers sending Jarrett Boykin to Sherman’s side to act as nothing more than a decoy in the season opener. This limited what the Packers were able to do on offense, as Aaron Rodgers struggled putting up any consistent yardage through the air.

One week later, Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers took the approach that we are likely going to see from Dallas on Sunday. While not extremely successful when targeting Sherman in that game, Rivers did complete 4-of-5 passes when going after the best in the business.

Jones is 100 percent correct here. If anyone can go up against Sherman and win, it’s Dez Bryant. He has the physicality and athletic ability to be successful on a consistent basis against any cornerback in the NFL.

And while some may point to Tony Romo throwing in Sherman’s direction as asking for disaster, it’s important to note that Romo is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL as it relates to limiting interceptions. He has thrown 15 interceptions in 694 passes since the start of the 2013 season. That’s one pick per 43.3 pass attempts.

Dallas enters this game as a nine-point underdog and will need its key playmakers on offense to step up in order to have a chance against Sherman and the Legion of Boom.
