With less than a month remaining in their season, the disappointing Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly fired general manager Kevin Towers.
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the team is expected to make the announcement Friday morning.
Towers has been with Arizona since 2010 after he left the San Diego Padres following a 15-year career in the team’s front office. The Diamondbacks enjoyed success out of the gate with Towers heading the player personnel department in 2011, winning 94 games.
But it has been downhill ever since.
Arizona finished with 81 wins in 2012 and 2013 before taking a step back from contention to cellar-dwelling status in 2014. It is currently 23 games under .500 and just a couple games ahead of the Colorado Rockies for last place in the NL West.
Towers’ personnel decisions during this span have been questionable. He has traded away the likes of Justin Upton, Trevor Bauer, Jarrod Parker and Tyler Skaggs, among many other solid young players. The return was minimal in these deals, which has left Arizona in a less-than-stellar situation for the long term.
This reported firing also makes you wonder whether Kirk Gibson’s tenure as Arizona’s manager is coming to an end following the season.
