Patriots’ Bill Belichick Won’t Confirm Status of Rob Gronkowski

New England Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski may have spoken out of text when he said he is ready to play in Sunday’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins, because Bill Belichick is not ready to confirm Gronk’s participation in Sunday’s matchup.

According to the Patriots’ official site, Belichick had this to report on Gronkowski’s status (h/t NFL.com).

Well, I’m glad that Rob’s optimistic about his situation. We’ll go through the week of practice and take a look at everything, everybody and see where everybody is at and do what we feel like is best for the team.

With all due respect to Rob, I’m glad he feels the way he does but in the end, we’ll have to make the decision that we feel is best for the team and we’ll do that as we go through the week.

So Gronk wandered a bit off course with his optimism it would appear. The positive here is that the team’s offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels seemed to be more optimistic about the tight end’s chances of suiting up against the Dolphins, as he had this to report..

Rob has been practicing, and we’ve been doing some different things, building our offensive system and packages as we go throughout the course of the year. He’s been a part of that. Whatever we can or are available to use him to do — however big, small, whatever the decision is at the end of the week — and he’ll be ready to do it.

This is definitely more encouraging that what Belichick is stating regarding Gronkowski. However those who have drafted the beastly tight end to their fantasy teams would like a confirmation one way or the other. And the sooner the better. Knowing Belichick, that’s unlikely to happen.
