NFL Could Implement Reviews for Personal Foul Penalties

There has been a whole heck of a lot made about penalties thus far this year around the NFL. From controversial calls that have impacted the outcome of games to complete games riddled with laundry, it hasn’t been terribly pretty.

It is now being reported that personal foul penalties could be reviewable as early as the 2015 season.

This could be huge moving forward. Outcome of games around the NFL have been impacted too often due to bad personal foul penalties.

A prime example of this was the late hit called on Ahmad Brooks in the final minutes of the 49ers loss to New Orleans back in Week 11 of the 2013 season. Brooks had forced a game-clinching Drew Brees fumble, but the penalty gave the Saints the ball a new set of downs, which eventually led to a game-tying field goal. New Orleans went on to win the game, as San Francisco fell one game short of winning the NFC West and possessing home-field throughout the playoffs.

Rapoport did conclude that it’s possible not every personal foul penalty would be reviewable (h/t NFL.com).

Rapoport noted that making personal foul penalties reviewable might start a “little narrower — it could be just hits on receivers,” but it’s an encouraging first step for a rule change many felt should have passed years ago.
