More Suspensions Expected in MLB’s Biogenesis Scandal

On this day in 2013, multiple MLB players were suspended as part of an investigation surrounding a Biogenesis clinic in Florida. The impact these suspensions had on teams around MLB were pretty clear. The Texas Rangers lost outfielder Nelson Cruz for the remainder of the regular season, while  Jhonny Peralta was also missing from the Detroit Tigers lineup for a while.

According to various reports, it’s possible that we could see another round of suspensions around the baseball world after law enforcement officials arrested individuals who have had direct contact with MLB players.

Drug Enforcement Administration officials arrested 10 people, including the clinics founder Anthony Bosch on Tuesday morning. If Bosch’s name rings a bell, it should. He was the central figure surrounding Alex Rodriguez’s connection with the clinic and has previously worked with officials to name players involved in the illegal operation.

According to ESPN investigative reporter T.J. Quinn those associated with Bosch and his operation were rounded up at their homes on Tuesday morning.

Several of his (Bosch) associates with ties to the anti-aging/wellness business were picked up at their homes in the predawn hours and brought in for processing.

The arrests were made after a two-year investigation into the clinic. Seven of the arrests were directly related to Biogensis. Among those arrested were Rodgriguez’ cousin Yuri Sucart. For his part, Bosch, who has pleaded out on charges in the past, plans to work with officials in their ongoing investigation. Bosch’s attorney had this to say after his client was arrested on Tuesday.

That (guilty plea) will happen eventually.

This is not a good sign for any unnamed player involved in the clinic, as it appears there will be enough evidence come to light for MLB to suspend those directly linked to the individuals who were arrested on Tuesday.

In addition to this, Quinn indicated that law enforcement officials told him that the investigation revealed previously unnamed MLB players.

While we have no idea which players were named in the recent investigation, there is a good chance that MLB will take action at some point in the not-so-distant future. This could further the Biogenesis scandal around the baseball world and have a direct impact on the success of some teams.
