Saints Release Champ Bailey

Champ Bailey’s tenure with the New Orleans Saints didn’t last too long. After signing a two-year, $3.8 million contract this past offseason, the veteran defensive back was a part of the Saints final cuts on Saturday.

This is somewhat of a surprising move considering that the Saints owe Bailey $500 thousand in guaranteed money and were previously relying on him to play an important role in their secondary. He played just 37 snaps in four preseason games and didn’t have a clearly defined role.

Bailey, a future Hall of Famer, has seen his game regress a great deal over the past couple seasons. And at the age of 36, it’s highly unlikely that he will catch on with a team and play an important role moving forward this season.

At this point, his best decision would likely be to hang it up.
