Report: Patriots Trade for Packers DT’ Jerel Worthy

According to NFL media’s Ian Rapoport, the New England Patriots have traded for Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Jerel Worthy. Worthy, who was selected by the Packers with the 51st overall selection in the 2012 draft, has been dealt for a late-round pick in the 2015 draft.

The defensive tackle never seemed to click in Packers’ defensive coordinator Dom Capers’ system, as it gave him more responsibility than he had in his one-gap system at Michigan State. Worthy  has not yet taken the field this preseason due to a back injury and the pick being sent is contingent on Worthy making the Patriots’ 53-man roster. The back injury was not Worthy’s only stint on the injured reserve list, as the 24 year old missed all but two games in 2013 due to a torn ACL.

Playing 14 games as a rookie, Worthy accrued 14 tackles and two and a half sacks. Worthy played a role well for the Packers, and will look to bounce back from injury in New England.

The acquisition of Worthy is a low-risk, high-reward scenario for the Patriots. Add Worthy’s name to the ever-growing list of  gambles by Robert Kraft’s team, as Belichick and company never hesitate to get a leg up on the competition.
