NFL Increasing Practice Squad Rosters

The National Football League is expected to increase practice squad roster sizes from eight to 10 by some time next week. This might not seem like big news, but it will give each team an opportunity to control two more players throughout the course of the season and creates 64 more new jobs throughout the NFL.

Teams must still pass the players they designate to be on the practice squad through waivers, at which point other teams can pick said player up for their 53-man roster. Outside of creating more jobs for players around the league and some flexibility for all 32 teams, this helps out those teams who are considered deeper than others.

The Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots have all made some difficult decisions in the past, which has led to pretty good players catching on with other teams.

Considering that the NFL isn’t increasing active rosters from 53, this seems to benefit organizations who have a deeper talent pool. We can also expect more teams to carry just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, while making sure to keep at least one on the practice squad.
