Jets Release Ras-I Dowling and Jacoby Ford

Two surprise cuts from the New York Jets in their initial trimming down of the roster heading into the final week of the preseason. They sent first-team kick returner Jacoby Ford and former New England Patriots second-round pick Ras-I Dowling, the latter of whom Rex Ryan viewed as a reclamation project.

Ford, a fourth-round pick of the Oakland Raiders back in 2010, put up his best statistical season as a rookie that season. He recorded 25 receptions for 470 yards and two touchdowns on offense while adding three kick returns for scores.

Unfortunately for the smallish receiver, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy over the past few seasons. Ford has missed 26 games since the start of the 2011 campaign.

Dowling, who also has a history of injuries, has played in just nine games over the course of his first three NFL seasons. New England released the Virginia product prior to the start of last season. He was then picked up by the Jets as a practice squad player.
