25 Flags and One Ejection in Broncos-Seahawks ‘Rematch’

A 45-minute lightning delay on Thursday evening didn’t stop the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks from taking the field and literally throwing punches in their “rematch” of the Super Bowl from this past February.

Second-year Seahawks cornerback Tharold Simon, making his NFL debut after missing the entire 2013 season, threw a punch at Broncos running back Kapri Bibbs in the third quarter of the preseason opener for both teams.

Simon was flagged and immediately ejected from the game.

It was one of 25 penalties for a total of 226 yards between these two elite NFL franchises. Needless to say, there isn’t much Denver and Seattle, two former AFC West rivals, like about one another at this point.

Unfortunately, the penalties seemed to get the best of both sides, as this game was nearly unwatchable from the opening kickoff.

Both Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson did lead their team to a touchdown-scoring drive in limited playing time. Terrelle Pryor got most of the playing time under center for Seattle, completing 9-of-16 passes for 137 yards while adding 28 yards on the ground. Brock Osweiler, in a training camp fight with Zac Dysert to be Manning’s primary backup, completed 6-of-12 passes for 85 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Denver will travel to California to take on the San Francisco 49ers at their new digs in Santa Clara next week, while Seattle will host the San Diego Chargers. Let’s hope both teams start to realize that this is just the preseason between now and then.
