Updated: LeBron James and Pat Riley Meeting in Vegas

Reports suggested that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade had dinner at an exclusive Las Vegas hotspot on Monday night. It now appears that Miami Heat president Pat Riley will meet face-to-face with James in the desert city at some point on Wednesday.

It’s an interesting development considering that James had previously indicated he didn’t need to meet with Heat officals when he decided to opt out of his contract earlier this offseason.

Rumors in recent days have trended more towards James leaning to returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Chris Sheridan of Sheridan Hoops had this to say about James and the Cavs on Monday.

A source who has been briefed on James’ free agency maneuverings told SheridanHoops that James’ inner circle, from his wife, Savannah to his agent, Rich Paul, to his best friends, Maverick Carter and Randy Mims, are unanimous in their belief that James’ best move is a return to the team he played for from 2003-2010.

Could this be one last-ditch effort from Riley to keep the Big Three together? That remains to be seen. However, it’s no longer a certainty that James will return to the Heat.

And nor should it be.

Cleveland has a ton of assets to deal away in order to bring in more players to help James. In addition to that, it boasts an All-Star guard in the form of Kyrie Irving and just selected former Kansas standout Andrew Wiggins with the first pick in the 2014 NBA draft. In a vacuum, the Cavaliers might end up being a better long-term situation for James.

For his part, Riley seems to be confident that he will be able to retain James’ services (via USA Today).

Riley is confident James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade will return, according to people who have had phone conversations with Riley in the last week. The people spoke to USA TODAY Sports under the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the conversations.

In any event, hopefully James makes his “decision” soon, so the rest of the NBA can move on.
