Angels Acquire Lefty Reliever From the Diamondbacks

It might not be a direct answer to the blockbuster deal the Oakland Athletics pulled off on Friday evening, but the Los Angeles Angels have added some much-needed help to their bullpen. According to multiple reports, Los Angeles acquire left-handed specialist Joe Thatcher and reserve outfielder Tony Campana from the Arizona Diamondbacks for two prospects.

Thatcher, an eight-year MLB veteran, has some great peripherals this season. He boasts a 2.63 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a whopping 8.33 K/BB ratio. As it relates to Campana, he’s nothing more than a reserve outfielder or Triple-A option for the Angels. He’s hitting .150 in 60 at-bats this season.

Los Angeles sent minor leaguers Zach Borenstein and  Joey Krehbiel to Arizona in the deal.

Borenstein was the Angels minor league player of the year last season, hitting .337 with Class-A Inland Empire. He’s struggled a great deal between Double-A and Triple-A this season, hitting under .260. The outfielder was a 23rd-round pick back in 2011. SB Nation’s Joe Sickel ranked Borenstein as the Angels No. 10 prospect back in January.

If Borenstein were a Cardinals prospect, people would be comparing him to Allen Craig and Matt Carpenter as a guy exceeding his scouting reports.

Krehbiel, a reliever, has posted a 2.00 ERA in Single-A ball. He’s far from the big club, but boasts a fastball in the mid-90’s.
