San Diego Padres Fire GM Josh Byrnes

The San Diego Padres announced on Sunday that they have fired general manager Josh Byrnes, who had been with the team since 2010. The Padres are currently 11 games under .500 and 12.5 games back in the NL West.

San Diego currently ranks dead last in the Majors in runs scored, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Its offense has been historically bad throughout the first half of the season, which could be one of the reasons Byrnes was fired. After all, it has been his responsibility to find upgrades all over the diamond…something that he simply hasn’t done.

The team released a statement on the firing (via ESPN).

This ownership group is committed to fielding a team that consistently competes for postseason play,” Padres president and CEO Mike Dee said in a statement. “Thus far this season, the results on the field have been mixed at best and clearly have not lived up to expectations. After a lengthy evaluation of every facet of our baseball operations, we have decided to make this change today.

Dee went on to indicate that Omar Minaya as well as assistants A.J. Hinch and Fred Uhlman Jr will share the GM duties on an interim basis. It remains to be seen whether this move will have any impact on the Padres trade plans heading into July.
