Jon Krawczynksi is reporting that Flip Saunders has found his new head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves: Flip Saunders. After the Dave Joerger debacle, Saunders and Wolves were under pressure to find a solid coaching candidate. Is this a good or bad hire for the Wolves?

There’s no question the Kevin Love situation is causing a major mess internally for the Wolves. No legit coach wants to take a job where the best player is likely on his way out, thus increasing the chances of failure. The Wolves had interest in Vinny Del Negro and former Toronto Raptors and Wolves player, Sam Mitchell.
Neither candidate is a lights out hire for Saunders. The decision to have Saunders take over the coaching duties is like a band-aid move until next offseason, when the Wolves’ personnel situation is more firm.
If the Wolves can find a decent exchange for Love, plus add a few young assets through this year’s draft, the Wolves job becomes far more attractive. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if Saunders and the Wolves target guys like Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg, once the new group of young players get a chance to play together.
This isn’t a bad for the Wolves. It’s a safe move. There have been far too many non-safe moves in this franchise’s history, perhaps this one provides better a outcome.
