St. Louis Rams Likely to Play Greg Robinson at Guard

It remains to be seen whether selecting Greg Robinson at No. 2 overall will be the right decision for the St. Louis Rams moving forward, but it’s likely that their first decision with the new offensive lineman will help out in the running game.

Appearing on Pro Football Talk Live on Monday, Rams general manager Les Snead indicated that they are planning on playing Robinson, a natural left tackle, at guard in 2014.

We really like Jake Long and we think he’s one of our best five offensive lineman…His rehab is going as planned, so if it still continues to move down the path of being on schedule, he’ll be in the lineup Week One and right now Greg will be somewhere else on the line and right now it’s leaning towards a guard position.

If Robinson is relegated to the guard position throughout his career, selecting him No. 2 overall would end up being an incredible reach. With that said, it makes perfect sense in the short term. Robinson is a mauler in the run game and the Rams have a franchise book end in Jake Long who they are paying left tackle money to. Robinson’s best chance at being an immediate-impact performer will be to play on the inside early in his career, where his issues in pass protection with be masked.

In addition to that, Robinson should help a rushing attack that ranked in the bottom half of the league last season. Second-year starter Zac Stacy picked up this unit when he started to get regular touches, picking up over 1,100 total yards in the final 12 games of the season. Adding Tre Mason as a change-of-pace back should help the Rams rushing attack moving forward. That’s only magnified by Robinson moving inside to act as the best run blocker on the team.
