Diluted Samples Led to Flagged Drug Tests at NFL Scouting Combine

Are NFL draft prospects really this clueless? Remember when you applied for a job as a teenager and were going to be tested for marijuana? The rage was then to drink a whole lot of water in hopes that the joint you smoked at a house party two weeks before didn’t show up on the test. For the most part, it worked when we were younger.

News flash. The National Football League isn’t your local Safeway or Costco. It kinda knows when someone is trying to pull a quick one. This makes you wonder what NFL draft prospects Zach Mettenberger and Timmy Jernigan, among others, were thinking when they were tested at the scouting combine in Indianapolis a couple months ago.

Really, Zach? The “extreme water intake” had absolutely nothing with you probably smoking some marijuana after the LSU season came to an end?

Well that pretty much sums it up.

If you remember correctly, Mettenberger was kicked off the University of Georgia football team back in 2010 due to an off-field incident. He later plead guilty to a sexual battery charge (via USA Today). Entering LSU with character issues, Mettenberger made himself a potential mid-round draft prospect. The issue now is whether NFL teams are willing to believe his latest excuse.

For what it’s worth, Grantland contributor and respected football mind Bill Barnwell isn’t having any of it.

According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, more than 10 players had their drug tests flagged at the combine earlier this year. Among those players mentioned in Glazer’s report along with Mettenberger are Christian Jones (LB, FLorida State), Telvin Smith (LB, Florida State), Seantrel Henderson (OT, Miami), Timmy Jernigan (DT, Florida State) and Anthony Johnson (DT, Louisiana State).

Remember, these are just allegations of drug use. It’s still rather ridiculous to look at from an outsider perspective. If true, these NFL draft prospects decided that a little weed was worth screwing up the biggest job interviews of their lives.
