Shock And Utter Confusion: Knicks Fire Mike Woodson

Coming off a disappointing 37-45 season, the New York Knicks have sent head coach Mike Woodson packing. The veteran head man had coached New York for two-plus seasons, leading it to a 54-28 record in 2012-2013.

Things took a turn this past regular season, as the Knicks dealt with injuries and lackluster play from a majority of their veterans to miss out on the Eastern Conference Playoffs by one game. Woodson is now the scapegoat, and there will be yet another coaching change in the Big Apple.

Whoever Knicks president Phil Jackson decides to bring on will be the Knicks seventh head coach since they parted ways with Jeff Van Gundy following the 2001-2002 season. Talk about stability on the bench.

Rumors have floated around that Jackson plans to hire his former sharp shooter from the Chicago Bulls, Steve Kerr, who has no NBA coaching experience. Kerr’s previous post-playing experience includes a stint as the Phoenix Suns general manager from 2007-2010.

The writing was on the wall for Woodson, even before New York failed to make the playoffs. Once Jackson was brought on as president, it was believed he would want to go out there and get is own man. Whether that man is Kerr, remains to be seen.

In any event, expect another busy offseason for the often-critisized “darling” of New York City. Star forward Carmelo Anthony can opt out of his contract this offseason and has indicated he’s not “at that point in his career where he wants to rebuild.” (via ESPN.com). Fellow forward Amar’e Stoudemire also has an early termination option in his contract. The Knicks are also without a first-round pick in the June draft.

As it relates to Woodson, he was 109-79 in two-plus seasons manning the Knicks bench. He’ll likely land as an assistant somewhere this offseason.
