Seattle Seahawks Have Hired Jeff Ireland

This is actually a thing.

According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, the Seattle Seahawks have hired former Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland as a pre-draft consultant. As much as the story seemed to be something out of a fake newspaper, Ireland is going to help John Schneider and Co. prepare for the draft, which starts in less than two weeks time.

The two sides will then sit down and look for a potential full-time role for Ireland who, to put it nicely, isn’t exactly respected a great deal around league circles. And that’s just from a personality perspective.

In terms of personnel moves, the draft in particular, Ireland had been the most inept front office executive in the league prior to the Dolphins parting ways with him earlier this year.

Year Pick Player Position College
2008 2 (32) Phillip Merling DE Clemson
2008 2 (57) Chad Henne QB Michigan
2009 2 (44) Pat White QB West Virginia
2011 2 (62) Daniel Thomas RB Kansas State
2012 2 (42) Jonathan Martin OT Stanford
2013 1 (3) Dion Jordan DE Oregon

In addition to this, the Dolphins MO under Ireland was to bring on role players from contending teams and make them the face of their franchise. Last offseason was a prime example of this when they overpaid for Mike Wallace, Philip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe.

In terms of success, you would be hard pressed to find two organizations, in the Dolphins and Seahawks, that have moved in such opposite directions over the past few years.

While it remains to be seen what Ireland’s role might be, let’s hope his bad mojo doesn’t impact the Seahawks draft success next month.
