Jimmy Rollins Mouths Off During Walk Off

Jimmy Rollins has been a very important piece to the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization. That much is obvious. The Phillies also happen to be under-performing after making numerous investments. Fans are going to heckle for the sake of heckling, and most players choose to ignore them. Last night, Rollins was not one of those players.

It’s still early, but the Phillies hardly look like a team poised to make a run at a championship this year. They chose to invest in players like Rollins, Cliff Lee, A.J. Burnett, Jonathan Papelbon, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Cole Hamels. If you aren’t doing the math at home, that’s $110.28 million dollars in salary this year.

Seven players and $110.28 million. Ouch.

It’s hard to blame Phillies fans for being frustrated, but heckling players like Rollins isn’t smart. The front office chose to sign/trade for those players, and that’s not the players’ fault. Six years ago, most of those players helped the Phillies win the World Series. Twenty U.S. dollars says those heckling fans weren’t heckling players that year.

Some fans need to realize there are teams who haven’t sniffed a World Series in decades, yet the Phillies are six years removed from a ring. Jimmy Rollins did nothing wrong besides let his emotions get the best of him. Rollins and the players were excited and the fans should be too. We wouldn’t be surprised if this fans does his heckling from seats further way, or better yet, his living room coach (assuming he doesn’t live with his mom).
