The Denver Broncos are going to meet with quarterback Kirk Cousins’ agent Mike McCartney, according to a report by Mike Klis of 9news.com.
Coincidentally enough, McCartney also represents quarterback Trevor Siemian and Senior Bowl MVP Kyle Lauletta.
As it pertains to NFL tampering rules, Broncos general manager John Elway cannot discuss Cousins specifically with McCartney until the free agency legal tampering window opens (wink, wink).
Here’s how Klis put it: “Tampering rules prohibit Cousins from coming up when Elway and McCartney meet as part of the NFL Combine schedule that runs Tuesday through Monday. If that sentence just caused NFL observers to chuckle or cough, one other prominent NFL agent said Combine gatherings have increasingly become more greet than meet.”
Elway can talk about Siemian and Lauletta all he wishes. This meeting is expected to take place at the NFL Combine this week in Indianapolis. The NFL considers March 12 the “soft opening” of free agency which technically kicks off on March 14.
Siemian is a likely trade or release candidate by Denver, and Cousins has been highly linked as a quarterback the Broncos want to land. Denver also has the No. 5 pick in the draft but could be planning to select a rookie such as Lauletta, much later on.
When it comes to Cousins’ fate, it will soon be an open book when teams trying to snare him will be putting forth their best efforts.
