Josh McDaniels reportedly ‘comfortable in belief’ he will succeed Bill Belichick as head coach

The Las Vegas Raiders are making a push for Josh McDaniels, pursuing one of the best NFL coaching candidates with a general manager and coach pairing directly from the New England Patriots. But McDaniels might have an even better reason to turn down another head-coaching gig.

Not long after reports surfaced of issues between the Raiders and McDaniels, Las Vegas interviewed the Patriots’ offensive coordinator on Friday. It’s one of the few vacancies the respected play-caller has shown any interest in, viewing Las Vegas as a prime opportunity to become a head coach once again.

But even if the interview with Raiders’ owner Mark Davis goes well and an offer is made, it’s far from a guarantee the job is accepted.

According to Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, it would take a huge offer for McDaniels to take a head coaching job. The biggest reason is that he reportedly feels “comfortable” believing that he will succeed Bill Belichick as the next Patriots’ head coach.

Turning down the Raiders’ gig would be a risk. The 45-year-old offensive coordinator agreed to become the Indianapolis Colts head coach in 2018, but backed out at the last minute. Four years later, he could again be faced with an important decision.

McDaniels is the assistant Belichick trusts the most in New England and an endorsement from the greatest head coach in NFL history would go a long way. But team owner Robert Kraft will make his own decision and whenever Belichick retires, whether it’s in 2023 or 2027, a variety of factors will influence his decision.

Las Vegas can certainly make a strong offer, especially if it hires Patriots’ director of player personnel Dave Ziegler as general manager. But we’ve seen McDaniels be very picky about the next team he will coach and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he stays with the Patriots.
