Richard Sherman opens up on why Colin Kaepernick is unemployed

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has always been a boisterous figure since entering the NFL as a late-round pick back in 2011.

He’s not afraid to talk about the hot-button topics of the day, even if they don’t surround football itself. On Thursday, Sherman continued his outspoken ways in a video essay for The Players’ Tribune.

Only this time, he opened up about the Colin Kaepernick situation, offering his opinion as to why the quarterback remains unemployed.

“Of course he (Kaepernick) deserves a job. You saw the quarterback play throughout the league and it was horrible,” Sherman said, via The Players’ Tribune. “What happened to Indianapolis. You saying they couldn’t use Kaepernick? That’s you know, that’s crazy talk. But you know, it’s unfortunate that a man is unemployed right now who’s a pretty good ball player. Won his fair share of ball games.”

Those who continue to question why Kaepernick is not employed were given a bit more of a podium to speak on after the disastrous performances we saw from quarterbacks in Week 1. Sherman references a Colts team that saw Scott Tolzien throw two pick-six’s in its 46-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

That’s the obvious situation most will point to. With Andrew Luck remaining sidelined after off-season shoulder surgery, the Colts are left relying on Tolzien and the recently acquired Jacoby Brissett. It would be hard to come up with a football-related reason why the Colts have not reached out to Kaepernick. That’s the crux of the issue for many.

It’s also something Sherman talked about in detail.

‘And there are lesser-talented guys employed because they didn’t stand up for a cause. But sometimes it’s not about winning. It’s not about losing. It’s about making a statement and not bringing drama and stress to your organization. And that’s the decision some of these teams are making, unfortunately,” Sherman continued. “The people that are frustrated with these things are the people that are frustrated they’re protesting this cause should try walking in someone else’s shoes for a sec.”

For full disclosure, Seattle met with Kaepernick during the summer and decided against signing the much-maligned quarterback. Instead, the team is rolling with Austin Davis as its backup.

Considering how poor the Seahawks’ offensive line is, Russell Wilson’s health is not a certainty moving forward this season. Maybe, Sherman should talk to his general manager and owner about his team’s quarterback situation and why his team didn’t bring Kaepernick in.

Either way, this is going to continue being a topic around the football world as long as Kaepernick remains unemployed and there are multiple quarterbacks taking the field on a weekly basis who are lesser players than him.
