Report: Patriots, Anquan Boldin have mutual interest

NFL free agents, Anquan Boldin

Anquan Boldin’s retirement might not last too long. Mere weeks after announcing he is stepping away from the game, the former 1,000-yard receiver could very well latch on with the defending champion New England Patriots.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, there is mutual interest between Boldin and the Patriots.

“In light of Edelman’s injury, a league source said the Patriots and recently retired Anquan Boldin had mutual interest in bringing Boldin to New England this offseason, and he remains intrigued by the possibility,” Volin reported.

The issue here is that Boldin retired from the Buffalo Bills after spending just a couple weeks with the team during the summer. Buffalo currently holds his rights and would have to release the receiver in order for the Patriots to sign him. That seems to be highly unlikely.

It’s also important to note that New England added former Indianapolis Colts first-round pick Phillip Dorsett in a trade on Saturday. It’s not yet known if the team’s interest in Boldin remains strong following that acquisition.

Boldin, 36, recorded 67 receptions for 584 yards and eight touchdowns for the Detroit Lions last season. It goes without saying he would be a good fit as a possession receiver for Tom Brady and Co. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
