Report: Dwight Howard trade had some Hawks ‘screaming with jubilation’

Dwight Howard practice Atlanta Hawks

At least some members of the Atlanta Hawks were not unhappy that Dwight Howard was traded to the Charlotte Hornets. In fact, some were reportedly thrilled with the news.

On his podcast, ESPN’s Zach Lowe relayed stories that he had heard of  “Hawks players learning about the trade and screaming with jubilation into their phone” after the trade.

“You ask why, and one account was that Dwight would give these speeches before the game about how everyone is playing hard, we want unity, we’re going to… and then go out and play like a blah game where he demands post touches and doesn’t rotate as hard as he could,” Lowe said, as transcribed by Kurt Helin of NBC Sports. “And everyone is like, ‘Why are you speaking in the locker room?’ But that’s all anecdotal. It’s just crazy how these stories come out after every stop in his career.”

Indeed, whether it’s been with the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets or Atlanta Hawks, Howard has tended to leave a bad taste in the mouths of his former teams.

Since his trade, Howard has made it clear that he thinks he can still be a great player. Certainly, that would go a long way towards making a better impression on his new teammates that he’s left in previous places. It certainly sounds as though with his past, he’s fighting an uphill battle.
