Report: Chiefs will listen to trade offers for Alex Smith after season

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith after Week 1 win over Patriots

For Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback Alex Smith, the writing has been on the wall for some time. Once his team traded up for Patrick Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, it became readily apparent that Smith’s days in Kansas City were numbered.

It’s something the Pro Bowl quarterback has addressed multiple times since the draft this past spring.

Now comes this report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicating that the Chiefs will listen to trade offers from other teams for Smith following the 2017 campaign.

“The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to listen to trade offers for quarterback Alex Smith after this season, according to league sources,” Schefter reported.

Smith, 33, remains one of the most-underrated quarterbacks in a league that has struggled with good play from this position in recent seasons. He’s coming off a Week 1 performance in which he completed 28-of-35 passes for 368 yards and four scores en route to a win over the defending champion New England Patriots.

In four-plus seasons with the Chiefs, Smith has put up a tremendous 42-20 record with 80 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. Needless to say, he would be a highly sought-after commodity on the trade block should that come to fruition following the 2017 season.

With a contract that will count $20.6 million against the cap in 2018, Smith’s salary is also pretty solid from a team standpoint. That will definitely play a role in the type of interest he sees.
