Judge denies NFL’s emergency motion against Ezekiel Elliott

Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys

Unless for some reason there’s an expedited hearing in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will likely play the remainder of the season.

On Monday, Judge Amos Mazzant ruled that the NFL’s emergency motion to stay the temporary injunction overturning Elliott’s six-game ban has been denied.

This now means that the NFL will take the case to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, a court that likely won’t hear the case until well after the 2017 season comes to a conclusion.

Though, Mazzant’s ruling did set precedence for the case to be expedited. A process that would help the league as it looks to reinstate Elliott’s six-game ban.

It will now be interesting to see if the NFL’s request for an expedited hearing in the court of appeals will be granted. Considering that Mazzant himself concluded that a patent case was more important than the league’s arbitration issue, that seems highly unlikely.

As of now, it sure looks like Elliott will play out the remainder of the season. After that, it’s pretty much anyone’s guess.
